Syracuse University and the local community celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. King

Angela Rye, noted political strategist and commentator, will give the Keynote Address at the 33rd annual MLK Jr Syracuse University and Community Celebration
Syracuse University hosts the largest university-sponsored, combined University/Community dinner and celebration of the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. each year. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of this event. The SU/Syracuse Community Celebration will take place this Sunday evening, January 28th in the Carrier Dome. Angela Rye, acclaimed political commentator for both CNN and NPR, is the 2018 keynote speaker. Rye, an attorney and principal/CEO of IMPACT Strategies, is committed to ensuring positive change in the political process by building relationships for corporations, unions, nonprofits, and elected officials. Rye seeks to encourage young professionals in three core areas: Economic empowerment, Civic engagement, and Political involvement. Additionally, the 2018 Unsung Hero’s will be recognized at the event. This year they include: Chris Burns (local community member); Authur Harrison and Ed Beauford (community members); Dominique Downey (current SU student); Keenan Lewis (current student and community leader); and Robert Wilson (SU staff member). The event includes a celebration dinner, keynote address, the presentation of the Unsung Hero Awards, and student/community performances. This year, the SU Student Association purchased tickets for the dinner, making attendance possible for those students unable to afford the cost. Doors are open (after the dinner) making the remainder of the event open and free to all.

In July 1965 Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr. visited the campus of Syracuse University and spoke at Simms Hall. He was introduced by his long time friend and Syracuse University faculty member Dr. Charles Willie.
