Dr. Eduardo Stein Barrillas to lead discussion of political crisis in Central America

Many MPA/MA IR students have been working tirelessly to put together what promises to be an interesting talk and panel discussion on the current political crisis in Guatemala.  PLACA – the Program on Latin and Caribbean America  – just one of many regional centers located within the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs, is the major sponsor of this event. Professor Rafael Fernandez de Castro will serve as moderator of the event, which features our guest speaker, Dr. Eduardo Stein Barrillas, former Vice President of Guatemala (2004-08).

“Guatemala is facing a major political crisis. A UN Commission helped uncover a corruption scheme that shook Guatemala’s regime.  Both the President and Vice President of the country resigned and were jailed.

Honduras and El Salvador are following suit in this widespread anti-corruption sentiment. Could this be a tipping point to a “Central American Spring”?  Dr. Eduardo Stein Barrillas, former Vice President of Guatemala, will lead a panel discussion of the effects of UN intervention and civil society movements in Central America.”

Thursday, September 24, Noon, Public Events Room, Free and Open to the Public
