FLAS Applications for AY 2017-18 Now Available: HINDI and URDU

FLAS Application Deadline – March 10 (above: the word HINDI in Devanagari script)
The South Asia Center at the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs is pleased to announce the 2017-2018 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship competition. Eligible students (US citizens or permanent residents), particularly those with research interests in these regions are encouraged to apply. This includes newly admitted, incoming graduate students, particularly if they have some prior language training in HINDI or URDU.
FLAS Fellowships support Syracuse graduate students with $15,000 toward stipend and 24 credits of tuition during the academic. FLAS fellowships are awarded for Hindi-Urdu study at Syracuse University. In addition to taking a language course during both semesters of the fellowship, academic year FLAS fellows are required to take one South Asia related course each semester. Each year, anywhere from 3-6 Master of International Relations (MA IR) students are supported via the FLAS Fellowships.
The FLAS application and more details are available online at: https://www.maxwell.syr.edu/moynihan/sac/FLAS/. If you have questions about the FLAS Fellowships, please contact Emera Bridger Wilson (elbridge@syr.edu).
New and Continuing Graduate degree candidates interested in professional or applied careers, or in government service are especially encouraged to apply. The current FLAS guidelines require the selection committees to consider financial need. The biggest shift in FLAS policy is that students who will be at the intermediate level or above will receive strongest consideration. Students wanting to take language courses at the introductory level should apply; they may be qualified in certain circumstances, which will be examined on a case-by case basis.
The deadline for applying is Friday, March 10, 2017.
Current graduate students in PAIA who were awarded AY 2016-17 FLAS Fellowships include:
two second year students –
Ethan Flack (MA IR/MPA) and Gretchen Wesche (MA IR/MS Education – Teaching and Curriculum); and
three first year students –
Rainea Cumberbatch (Public Diplomacy), James Sinkovic (MA IR), and Trace Carlson (MA IR).
